Rewrite History: Civil War/Reconstruction

We’ve been thinking hard about our essential question for this unit, “Did the Civil War move America towards its ideals?” I think we can all agree that though America may have moved a little closer to the ideal that “all men are created equal,” it didn’t reach that goal after the Civil War. There was still a definite lack of equality between different groups of people in the U.S.

Take a moment to think about everything that you’ve learned about the Civil War and Reconstruction.  What people, events, or actions do you think made a positive impact on history?  What people, events, or actions do you think made a negative impact on history?  What do you think SHOULD HAVE happened after the Civil War?  How could America have moved even closer to its ideals?

if you ask me i would say that there were so many whites that can do a lot for us and like the things we did at war because if they did not we would not have had the bufflo soilders and the 54 regiment

    Positive-
some positive actions and people that took place during or after the war was first the Freedman’s Bureau there was also Abraham Lincon who wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, during the war, that freed all slaves in the southern grounds. After the war the document of the 15th amendment was put in congress that gave the freed slaves the right to vote in any country. Negative-
Some negative actions and people that were in the war was first Black Codes, which prevented slave from using their new rights and also laws of segregation between blacks and whites. Then there was sharecropping that southerners stook advantage of the freed men that rented their land.

i think it would have been better if the freed men accualy got real freedom ecause they were stil servants and were separated from whites.

The Freedmen’s Bureau was a postive impact on history. without the Freedmen’s Bureau those 4,300 schools and churches wouldn’t of been built. Then the African Americans wouldn’t be able to have a free education to learn.

I agree with stephen because if the freed men were free they wouldnt besperated from the white and stuff.

i think that if the blacks had the same exact law as the whites they wouldve been more equal and the it wouldve been better if everyone was treated the same

The governament did many positive plans to halp America get closer to its ideal. For example, the Freedmen’s Bureau helped African Americans got education. The Emancipation Proclamation helped to freed most the salves in the South. The 15th amendment helped black can vote too. And the Share Cropping led former slaves got land to form and could made money by themselves.

I think the freedmans Bureau was a positive event on the african americans because the congressmen made it possible for them to go to church, to get medical aid, & they opened 4,300 schools to give africans the right for education. The event that gave a negative side to america was (example) the “Black Codes”. They tried to prevent everything that the congressmen tried to do, they said that if any white man would help or be involved with helping the africans americans they would be killed! I think that the cingressmen should have tried harder & if abraham lincoln would be living on this day he would of helped ALOT!
