I learned only one thing which is that u never see the cons win over the pros. But i also did learned that if you paid the taxes for the universal health care that would be good but you don’t know who will even contribute on the taxes

I think that this debate was very sucesful becasue i think that it was fun and that almost everybody participated. My opinion has not changed about the American health care system becasue i think the opposing sidde has failedd to convince me of it. They didn’t have much evidence and most of them didn’t even want to be on that side. Their statments were very vauge. I still believe that the american government should have universal health care!

During the debate, I learned that from the previous mock debate, the one from the illegal immigration unit, people have increased their ability to debate which allowed them to be able to make and press points made during the length of the debate. Some people who were a threat on the “No Universal Healthcare” side in my opinion were Pang, Freddy, and Andrew. Threats to them were me, larry, Lin Qiang, and more often then not, Robert. I learned to be a bit more organized and careful once the next debate comes around.

I learn that in order to get free healthcare you have to pay more taxes and that is bad. I found that the United States can’t even get free univervise healthcare even if they try because people won’t pay that many taxes. The thing i found interesting is that it’s really hard to find the right choice. The goverment should make an affordable healthcare that don’t dinels as much as those othe healthcare.

Things that i learn was that everyone in the class mostly want free health insuance because they dont want to get injuryed and and have to pay alot of money just to get the right medical care. I also learn that this topic and relate to other topics like the Iraq war that we are in now. Alot of people in the war get injuryed and they dont have much health care and that’s how they die. Another thingi learn is that taxes doesnt cause what u have to pay in health insurance. I always though that the the amount of taxes you pay it goes to your help insurance.

Max, the cons do win sometimes. Pros in this case win more. No offense.

What I found intresting was that even though some of the delegates oon my opposing side didn’t want to be on that side their statements were somewhat convinving.

I learned during the debate that people ere discussing about why it is not fair for us to waste our tax money on the people that have to pay for their health isnurance. But I found out they were wrong. Using taxes for helping other people is the right thing to do. For example for this helping is social security. It is a way that gives a small percentage to osme elderly people above 60. I also learned that alot of the taxes that we have has also been used for warfare. The president is using it all on weapons. I also learned that everytime we burn away all the taxes we gave to the government our econemy lowers. I think I am against health universal care.

  9. on April 1, 2008 at 8:06 am Eric HOm 802 Said:

I found out that lobbists (did i spell it correctly?) meant people who bribe the congress or the president to get something they want.
I found how the other side might be really mean or be really ignorant to fight for their side. They only think about themselves and the people they care about.
One thing i find intresting and sick is that the CEOs of health care insurances actually BRIBE the president and the members of the congress

  10. on April 1, 2008 at 8:07 am Derrick 802 Said:

Three things that I learned from the debate are taxes will increase. Another thing that I learned is that money should go to war instead of healthcare. The last thing that I learned is that more factories should increase. One thing that I found interesting is that the whole topic was really about healthcare, taxes, and war.I change my mind about there shouldn’t be healthcare, I think there should be healthcare because people help the government by paying their taxes, shouldn’t the government help them back.

  11. on April 1, 2008 at 8:07 am Larry Lin.....802 Said:

i was supporting the universal health care. 9one thing tha i found interesting ia thta thing that are false can be turned into truths. Somebody said that the government is ging corrunpt, but there was really no evuidence except on the healthcafre society. there was no evidence and the person said that he doesnt wanto to go off topic. If the person thinks that the government is corrupt, then why did he bring up that issue? thsi makes people think that the government is corrupt. Another thing that i learned is that during a debate, when your hear someone say something that you dont agree with, then sometimes you would shout it out. The third thing that i learned is that each side have there strong point and each side mentioned that point.

One thing that i learned interesting was that i never knew that the goverment would go bankerupt if we provided free healthcare for U.S citizens.
Anothing thing that i learned that was interesting was that we would have to pay more and more taxes in the U.S.
One more thing i learned was that the U.S could not provide free heath insurance due to many effects that can happen like taxes and stuff.

I learn that lobbists are people who bribe the government or the president to get something they want.
I think the intresting thing is that if we know the health care bribe the congress, why wont the congress members get remove, or the health care company get in trouble
Another intresting thing i heard is that people mention about the health care systems being corrupted that the sicko movie mentioned, since the movie is published and now that people know, why wont anyone do something about the health care companies?

  15. on April 1, 2008 at 8:08 am Wendy Chen Said:

    3 things i found interesting in today’s debate…
*Max said, “Paying more tax is like paying for your own insurance.” I think that we should pay more tax and pay more money. Would you rather be rich or would you rather have your life?
*Another thing i found intersting is that the government don’t care about its citizens and don’t care for the citizen’s health care. WE should get FREE haelth care.
*Last thing i have found interesting is that many people wants to spend more tax to get free health care.

  16. on April 1, 2008 at 8:08 am Andrew Tsang 802 Said:

    1. I learned that the health care in the U.S is’nt perfect.
    2. I found the war vs. health care issue was interesting. The money for war is more needed because if we don’t support the army, we might lose. We might be winning now, but even a change like Universal health care can be a big factor. If we don’t spend enough money on the war, many soldiers can die and we may lose. That is a possibility and we must take no chances of losing to Iraq even if that chance is slim.
    3. I learned that life would be better if we had universal health care and only because the taxes we pay go to the government and back to the people.

My thoughts aren’t changed. I still think that the Health care shouldn’t be changed till the war is over. We can’t take chances in losing because if we lose, Iraq will take over and the health care will be even worse.

  17. on April 1, 2008 at 8:09 am Jonathan Pang 8o2 Said:

    1. According to what Andrew and Max said, I learn that some of the taxes are currently use for warfares.
    2. U.S. health insurance did not prvide too many carings for their customers.
    3. There are about 50million people currently uninsured, which made the medical fees expensive.

After the debate, Im still standing next to my opinion which is no free universal health care. This is because taxes will raise if we give out free health insurance, it is the same as paying the medical fees. But according to what J.K. said, we would use the taxes to pay for other people’s medical fees. Is that call Justice? Imagine that you are paying for other people for all the money that you work hard for. Doesn’t that hurt? And what Larry said is that the taxes are not only use for others but all of us. Wow… that little taxes can pay for all of our medical fees? So whats the difference? Somehow, the government must do something about this issue like canceling the requirements of getting a health insurance and be full responsible of it’s customers (Ex. Dumping it’s customers out of the hospital when they have diseases.)

  18. on April 1, 2008 at 8:09 am Gloria 802 Said:

I learned that many people want the government to do something about the health insurance companies taking money. A lot of the money is used for the war. Many people think that free universial health care is a good idea even though we were assigned a side. Life would be better, people won’t die very soon.
My thoughts did not change, I still think that free universal health care is a good idea.

  19. on April 1, 2008 at 8:09 am Stacy 802 Said:

Three things that I learned in the debate is that many of the statements were about the government and about the War in Iraq. I think that the government has to do with something about the Universal Health Care, because if the US has Universal Health Care then the governments will increase the taxes. The War in Iraq has something to do with it to, because when people go to war, they need weapons, food , and etc. This will cost a lot of money so… (goes back to the government) the government also raises the taxes so they can help pay for the equipment in the Iraq War. I also learned that even though you know how much the taxes were raised, you don’t know how much times you can get hurt. You might get hurt many times without knowing when you get hurt. In the film SICKO, Ricky lost both his middle and ring finger. He had to choose between either one of them. I learned that people shouldn’t choose between these because they need both fingers for work or else they can’t use that hand to work at all. I think that Universal Health Care should be in the US because lots of people need Univeral Health Care even when they are poor and they can’t pay for the hospital bills.

i agree with max about what he said that cons will never win over pros. this is like karma. also, i don’t think it is fair that citizens have to pay taxes and fees for healthcare but when the time comes and people need healthcare, the companies try to scam their way out and find loopholes and say they don’t have to pay and they’re not liable and stuff. also nancy was correct when she said that there’s no point of paying for taxes etc if little to no citizens whoo have healthcare don’t GET the care that they need when it comes to health. thats will be all (: ty .

What i learned in the debate is that people rather have free universal health care because if you get hurt really badly you don’t have to worry because you have free health care. Another thing i learned is that when you don’t have free universal health care they can make the bill high or find past sickness so you can can’t be treated(this information is from SICKO). What i found interresting during the debate is mostly everybody on the FOR side always gave it to jonathan.K or Robert and everybody on the AGAISNT side gave their spare time to Freddy. Another thing i found interesting is that the FOR side had more information than the AGAISNT.

One thing that I found interesting is that a lot of people that were on the against side were talking about taxes and how it would affect the people.
My thoughts did not change after the debate because I noticed that most people were not on the against side adn wanted universal health care. Why wouldn’t they? Even if it increased taxes it saves lives.

I learned that reasons for free health care is that people won’t die and they can live longer and not use dont need to use a lot of money for their health.
I learned that the reason there shouldn’t be free health care because the U.S. is at war and they need lots of money to get weapons, food and etc.
I learned that the gov’t if there is free health care the money would add up to their taxes
I think the government should make health care lower because then people can afford it and the gov’t stil earn some money.

On thing that I found interesting during this debate is the argument between Jonathan K and Jonathan P. They each had very good points. Another thing that I found interesting is that most of the people on the opposing side wanted universal healthcare. The last thing that I found interesting is that people on my side was using health issues and the opposing side was using war issues. My thought still haven’t changed about the topic because people on the opposing side couldn’t convince me to change my mind.

  30. on April 1, 2008 at 8:12 am Freddy Lopez Said:

What are three things that you learned or that you found interesting in the debate?

I learned that both sides of free universal health can have a good defense against the other, people in the class think that the government is not corrupt, and that if people are given enough time they will forget their argument.

  31. on April 1, 2008 at 8:12 am [*NanXxyY*802] Said:

In the debate, I’ve noticed that even though people pay high taxes, a majority of them still don’t get free universal health care. Some people think that the government is not being fair…They are using the money people pay for tax mostly on other uses such as industries, inventions, etc. instead of health. Some believe that paying high taxes is worth it if you get free universal health care meaning getting your medical bills pay for. Some think that “free” health care isn’t really free since we must pay for it with taxes; expenses for health care would have to be paid for with higher taxes. Just because Americans are uninsured doesn’t mean they can’t receive health care! Some think that health care is a basic human right but some think the opposite.

  32. on April 1, 2008 at 8:13 am Ken 802 Said:

One thing i learned in this debate is that taxes would increase if there is free healthcare. Before this debate i thought that we could just make healthcare free without changing anything. After doing this debate i didnt change my view for free healthcare because i still belive that increasing the taxes by a little bit is better then paying the medical bill. I found out that there might be a chance that the goverment is corupted because those people that are in the goverment are sometimes getting bribed.

I learned about how it could affect our economy.
I learned about how it costs a lot of money and it could ruin this place just by helping the poor people. We also need money for other things that’s why we can’t have universal healthcare.
I learned about how lots of people can be very greedy and not be willing to help other people in need.

At the end of the debate, I still vote for my side, which is FOR universal health care. I think that that would make people enjoy living here longer. It could also increase population by having them enjoy their lives instead of making them die without protecting them.

Well, during the debate, somethings I learned were that the only country without universal health care is the United States. Also I learned that even though you have universal health care, then there will be more taxes. But during the film Sicko, people in France have universal health care and still live in a good life.

  36. on April 1, 2008 at 8:14 am Jon K 802 Said:

Hey Pang, ever heard of the salami theory in stocks? Well, if you get all the little bits of money together, if each american say donates one dollar, that’s about 300 million dollars. An american pays about $3000 in taxes i think. So $3000 times maybe 150 million americans is about 450 billion. thats about how much we spend on the war in Iraq. Even if the money doesn’t go to people, eventually people will begin to ask questions. The Internet will be burning etc.

  37. on April 1, 2008 at 8:21 am brandenjerez 802 Said:

i learned that free universal health care is a great idea because all well have to do is raise the taxes.Paying extra taxes will not be too bad because people can controll how many things they buy but people cant controll how many times they get badly hurt or sick. That way people can live without ever being scared to get hurt.

I learned many things while watching “Sicko”. I learned that health insurance rejected people because of their size and if the a worker rejects the most people, they get a bonus. Also other states get to have free healthinsurance and everything in the hospital is free. For example in Canada and France, they have free health insurance and for another country(forgot which country), hospitals pay people for their transportation fare. My thoughts didn’t change on this debate. I still think that U.S should have universal healthcare for everyone like other countries even if it means high taxes.

Also that people from tier side backed them up when someone made a speech tehy will try their best to support them. after the debate my side didnt change beacuse of make taxes higher for the heath insursance then the worker that got low incoming will barely have any money when they gto the money for the month. then they wont be able to buy the things they needed.

What should the government’s role be in keeping its citizen’s healthy?

i think that the government should keep the citizens safe because when it is war time they ask people that has no health insurance for help against war but when the citizens ask them back for health insurance they decline them, that iis why i think that the goverment should help the citizen, so when their sick you help them so when they go to war they won’t be sick if most of them are sick we will lose the war so therefore government should help

  46. on April 1, 2008 at 10:29 am Eric 804 Said:

I think universal healthcare a very good idea because we won’t need to pay insurance anymore and we won’t lose money for medicine, or medical help, or because of a little heart attack. If we have insurance we will be controlled by the insurance companies because they can say anything they want about their clients and they can stop the operation they need. The insurance companies will also charge large amounts of money for the lowest cases of injuries. They will also decline their clients and the clients might lose a life because they did no have their operation. It would make life better for everyone including the government.

Near the end of the debate people started to forget what they were going to say. I learned that there is going to be a lot a conflict about this topic of universial heath care. Eveybody has greed because everyone is still human. The are many people who wont give up that money to help other but continue to take advantage of them. There is going to be a long time till the majority of the people will agree on heath care.

I think the governments role should be resigned personally because right now it betrayes what it stands for. through history governments were there to help and take us to another level of finances and trust throughout the U.S but in reality this trust is being disapproved because lately all they did was suck money out of us and was kind of cause of the recession. So in order to for the government to change their role it would take alot of dedication to the U.S. i think they would have to start donations and charities for a start.

I agree with Amy because the United States is the only state without free universal healthcare. In other countries, such as Great Britain, the government not only pays for your healthcare, but they pay for the transportation as well. The United States does not give this to their citizens. The citizens have to pay for the transoprtation, healthcare, and the amounnt on the medical bill, etc. The total of that is gonna be at least a couple of thousand dollars. Where the HELL do the citizens of the US get that much money?! In addition to medical bills, we also have to pay for:
    -Electricity
    -Water
    -Food
    -Housing
    -Education
    -Insurance
    -Taxes

We pay for all this and medical bills too!

  55. on April 1, 2008 at 7:03 pm JC Said:

I agree with Adrian because he is right. The government doesn’t care about the health insurance of its people. All they do is write or stamp “Health Care Denied” for some reason. It feels like the government just takes money from hard working people and giving them nothing in return, not even health care. Also, during 9/11, volunteers poured in from all over the state to help out even though they weren’t on payroll. But wether or not they were on payroll were far from their minds. They only focused on one thing: helping the victims of 9/11. They worked day and night, day after day, week, after week, month after month, year after friggin’ year, in a big pile of metal, wood, papers, dust and ll that crap. Some of the volunteers even got sick from it, and the governmente doeesn’t care. The reason”
“These volunteers weren’t on our payroll”, so we cannot help them”, and like that, they were denied healthcare. What kinda government does that?

Through this debate, I was able to see the other perspective and I learned what made people not wanting to offer what they had to help others who need help. And that is because they are humans just like everyone else and very selfish. Also through what I’ve heard from people who have spoken during the debate, I also learned that the US government spend the money from the tax on education more than the health insurance. Besides that, I also improved my debating skills.

Q: What should the government’s role be in keeping its citizen’s healthy?

Because everyone has the right to have health insurance. And also that many people cannot afford the treatment that they need for their health. Although some say they should just get a job and take of themselves, I still think that everyone deserves health insurance. Because even those who have jobs, whether low or middle class, cannot afford the cost of treatments. So therefore, everyone should have health insurance.
