You will all be writing position papers on the topics assigned to your committee. Use this checklist to organize your notes and ideas.
Model UN Position Paper Checklist
Use this check list to guide your research. You can use the numbers on the list to code your notes (i.e. if you find a major historical event related to your topic, write a big number 6 next to the notes that you take on that event.) To write a convincing position paper, you must try to include all of the elements from the checklist!
1. Quote from your member state’s figurehead (leader), representative for the committee you’re in, the committee leader, or the Secretary General of the UN about the importance of your committee
2. Date your country entered the committee
3. The ministry/department in your country’s government that deals with this topic or committee
4. Quote from a UN Document that discusses the goal of your committee pertaining to the topic
5. Express your country’s concern about the topic. What does your country think about it?
6. Historical events or past National programs that concern this topic
7. International, regional, or national statistics (data – numbers, percentages, graphs, charts, etc.) from your country concerning why this topic matters to your country, or to the international community
8. Recent issues concerning this topic and your country
9. Use a quote from your member state’s figurehead, representative for the committee you’re in, the committee leader, or the Secretary General of the UN about your topic
10. Resolutions pertaining to the topic that 1) weren’t in the background guide and 2) your country has signed
11. International, regional, and national programs dealing with the topic that 1) weren’t in the background guide and 2) your member state is active in
12. Propose a plan with three or more actions that the international community must take to address this topic
13. Explain how this will solve the topic
