Congratulations!

Everyone did a fantastic job on the Mock Congress.  I am so impressed with the dedication that people put into staying true to their representative’s character and in researching the various topics related to immigration.  You should all be very proud of your work!

By Wednesday, January 2nd, you must turn in:

1) Final Draft of your bill (either on paper or on the blog)

2) First Draft of all of your bills

3) Rubric

Mock Congress Reflection

Take a few minutes to think back on the Mock Congress assessment.  Please answer the following questions:

- What did you learn about immigration?

- What did you learn about the U.S. Congress?

- What did you learn about the way that the U.S. creates laws?

- How did your personal opinion differ from your representative’s opinion?

- How would you personally answer our essential question: What should the immigration policy of the U.S. be?

Please answer in complete sentences, using as much detail as possible.

Model UN Position Paper Checklist

You will all be writing position papers on the topics assigned to your committee.  Use this checklist to organize your notes and ideas.

Model UN Position Paper Checklist

Use this check list to guide your research.  You can use the numbers on the list to code your notes (i.e. if you find a major historical event related to your topic, write a big number 6 next to the notes that you take on that event.)  To write a convincing position paper, you must try to include all of the elements from the checklist!

      1. Quote from your member state’s figurehead (leader), representative for the committee you’re in, the committee leader, or the Secretary General of the UN about the importance of your committee

      2. Date your country entered the committee

      3. The ministry/department in your country’s government that deals with this topic or committee

      4. Quote from a UN Document that discusses the goal of your committee pertaining to the topic

      5. Express your country’s concern about the topic.  What does your country think about it?

      6. Historical events or past National programs that concern this topic

      7. International, regional, or national statistics (data – numbers, percentages, graphs, charts, etc.) from your country concerning why this topic matters to your country, or to the international community

      8. Recent issues concerning this topic and your country

      9. Use a quote from your member state’s figurehead, representative for the committee you’re in, the committee leader, or the Secretary General of the UN about your topic

      10. Resolutions pertaining to the topic that 1) weren’t in the background guide and 2) your country has signed

      11. International, regional, and national programs dealing with the topic that 1) weren’t in the background guide and 2) your member state is active in

      12. Propose a plan with three or more actions that the international community must take to address this topic

      13. Explain how this will solve the topic

Another useful site for researching your rep’s view on immigration

David from 806 found this website (extra credit for David!!!):

 http://www.ontheissues.org/default.htm

1) Click on the state that your rep is from.

2) Scroll down and find your rep’s name.  Click on it.

3) Scroll down to find their positions on immigration and how they have voted in the past.
