A Country of Immigrants?
The timeline shows the history of immigration to the United States: when various groups of people came, who they were, and why they came. It has been said that America is a country of immigrants. Why then do we also have a history of prejudice towards newcomers? How does this affect our immigration policy (laws)?

i think that they do that because they are unsure about how they will or wont pay their taxes or money at all. they also need to worry about bombing systems, and that they dont bring in bad people.
I think people had racism or predjuce because they are stubborn or they think “they are all that”. They think they are better than the other people. For example whites (no offense toward any people) thought that the africans were lowlifes or the “devil’s child” because of their skin. This affected america because if the congress was predujuce they/he would only allow a certain type of skin color
I think that the U.S. have a prudice against newcomers is because they are scared that the trouble will happen again like wars and other stuff. That would affect the laws because then they would hate a certain race or don’t let anyone in becasue of the pasted attitude and that is worng.
I think that we had the history because back then there was not much secrity and everyone wanted to come. Immirgration was not a big deal because everyone was coming and taking over land. It affect the law because if there was no law about immirgration everyone would be coming and it will be over populated
they could also be worried about if some people have certain diseases that they dont have cures for. this is bad to them because many people can die of a disease and they dont want that or else their population will lower.
i think that bush is scare that ssome newcomers wil think that the laws is not fair and kill him or sumthing, or he is scared that the newcomers will commit crime and be a crimal so then we will have more and more crimals eveytime someone come to the untied states. this would definalty change the law because some race connot get in and that is worg.
I agree with Eric, issues like racism and prejudice appeared. According to the first Amendment, when you are a citizen of U.S. you have the freedom and nobody from outside of the country can do anything. But in other countries, persecution is still going on, I suggest that United Nation should do something about it since it is an organization to achieve human rights for people around the world. Agree?
I think that a country of immigrants is all right but not jammed packed and besides this is a free country and if my parents didnt immigrate here i wouldnt be here.

I believe that all immigrants should be aloud in the USA because this is a free country. Also if our ancestors did not imigrate here we would not even be here. I think the history of our country was really bloody and harsh. And i really hate it but there is still hope for change. We can do it!!!!!! ^_^ good luck =)

i think that if immigrants come here, they can also enjoy their life. it isnt fair for the people that werent able to come because what if they really needed to come? as if they were about to die or something? many people wouldnt like being pushed back. immigrants have feelings too!

I think what Henry was trying to say is that at some point someone in everyone’s family immigrated to the US. We all have a personal history of immigration.
To Steven: not thousands of people leave the US everyday and why would they leave they came here to have a better life.

I belieeve that people coming to the USA was just being smart. Their choice had made their lives easier. So i believe in imigration. I agree with everybody whoever think that immigration was good for amierca. This was really good for us because if our ancestors nver came to america you guys would not even be here. If you ask why the laws were considered as stupid… I will disagree with that (strongly) U.S. passed laws to limit the numbers of immigrants to not let cities being overcrowded. If this ever happen, more land are needed to build houses, apartments, etc… Anyway, having a colorful country is good but cities being overcowded is unacceptable. Trees will be cut down to build living place… The amount of carbon dioxide will increase, causing global warming speeds up. So don’t think that the laws that were passed to limit immigrants are stupid >.> Those laws were to maintain a steady world -_-”
i think that poeple are prejudgics becuase they are influenced by things in their early life. i dont think that it is their fault becuase there are just so many people coming in to the U.S and they just think that they are better becuase most of the immigrants were poor. There were like aliens and they seemed low statuus. They probably got the wrong idea, and i do agree that it is their fault that but i think there are their reasoning to be prejudgics.

When Chinese people arrived to America, they were treated badly because thy looked different from Americans so they were not always accepted. They also passed a law in the late 1800’s that stopped Chinese to immigrate to America.
Well, not like I’m agreeing with the government at the time but I think they did that because the more people there are in your country, the more resources you need to supply your population. And during that time there wasn’t a lot of supplies.
In 1882, there was an act called Chinese Exclusion Act which banned the ChinesE from coming to the U.S. for ten years. I disagree with this act because their old home China was already bad. In 1943, the law changed making the Chinese can come to the United States. I agree that the law should change because Chinese could make the U.S a better place.

i agree with larry cuz people can’t be born prejudgice and they were against people just cuz they were from different.
united states is made up of immigrants but still we treat them bad. we treat them with prejustice. an example of a prejustice that we did to immigrants is not letting them get jobs. i believe that we should give them the rights that we give to other people.

Immigration was good. People had religious freedom. There was a little racism because people would call Jewish people Jews and Fujinese people FJ’s and Africans the N word or Americans a type of biscuit that is used with cheese. Because of this, America is bad for immigration, but because of immigration, culture has been introduced to America. Asians brought Asian pottery to America.

Henry… Think about overcrowding… It will be hard for everyone to get jobs. The economy will fall due to the lost of resources. And besides, like i said, think about global warming. We need to cut down trees to build new living places. That can create more carbon dioxide.

I strongly agree with JP because these laws were made to help the US. I don’t think that the law for limiting the number of immigrants is unfair because if we want new comers, we have to think of the environment around us first. If we kept destroying our environment to make space for immigrants then we will not have a healthy place to live anymore. I don’t think that we should not let immigrants into our country. Immigration should just be kept to a yearly minimun so we will not be overpopulated.
(If there is not enough space for everyone, alot of people will end up homeless.)

Since immigration can be a controversial issue and we know that history has shown that people can be very prejudiced towards certain immigrant groups, it is important to be careful about where you are getting your information from.

I mean that sometimes people create websites that promote discrimination against others. Sometimes they are obvious, but sometimes they are subtle or sneaky. You need to know who created the site and what their purpose is in order to know if the information is accurate or true.

I agree with Larry that it wasn’t people’s fault being prejudice because they are influenced by things in their early life and immigrants were a big harm to the Americans. Their jobs were overtaken and also I think what Lin said was a good point. He said that people weren’t born being prejudice but because they are born with different faces than the others, or born/live in a better condition than some other people, they think they are better than the others. It’s not right to think this way cuz everyone is equal. People didn’t get to choose what religion/color they are born to be like you don’t. If you are born African American, it’s a fact, there’s nothing you can do to change this fact. Even though America is a country of immigrants, we also have a history of prejudice towards newcomers because of their color. Because the ones with more power thinks they can controll the people in a lower class than them. Being prejudice affect our immigration policy(laws)because the laws would be made unfairly. Americans weren’t happy at all about the immigrants and the overflowing of immigrants was a problem in the U.S. So then when laws were passed, it lower the limit of immigrants coming to America an also making the enter to America harder for the newcomers.

i think that if people are killed because of who they are, that is racist because it is unfair since america is a free country. there are many different kinds of immigrants.
the mexican came to America because they need money for supporting their families and they came to america to escape difficults conditions caused by wars. so if they came to america illegally… i dont blame them but i dont think it’s fair that they had to go to jail because they had to earn money for their families.

I agree with you, raymond of 804, discrimenation have been a problem before and is still happenning now. Like around last year, a girl can’t get into a school because she was black.
the chinese came to the united states in the 1850s. they left china for reasons. one is that they either want to get gold in california or they left because they situtation or a problem during their lifetime. when they were in china, they face fools and drought if it is raining which killed many crops. some ask for money and promise that they will owe them back in couple of years. several of the chinese were attacked by amercians. during their time, they help the amricans built the transcontinental railroad that connect east to the west.they also help them make fruits and vegatables. they also fish. the first act of 1882 called the chinese exclusion act banned all chinese from america.

there was prejudice towards the newcomers because they had something different from the regular americans had. for example, the chinese immigrants were treated badly because they looked different and spoke the different language. americans got jealous because they had better jobs, but they should think the immigrants might even worked better americans and had low pay just for a better life. americans even attacked them and blamed them if something went wrong.
karina, i agree with you. i think that those laws were made not to keep people out, but to make everyone safe. but i think its unfair for people to not be able to have their dream in america while others get what they want. even thought the law is right, its not fair.

New commers are a harm towards the Americans because jons were overtaken and because they were not welcomed, and cause a overcrowed situation in the U.S., the immigration policy won’t be as fairly as if the new commers cause no trouble and weren’t prejudie by.

To answer Ms.Fuller’s first question, well, obviously, a lot of people hate the people who have different nationality, culture, language or skin color/looking. For example: (no offense to anyone, of course)European-Americans treat African-Americans like… not even as a human being! They were only considered as a slave, if not, then worse. The European-Americans think they are better than the African-Americans because their skin color are much lighter than the African-American’s. This doesn’t just happen to African-Americans, I know that this also happen to be people who are hispanic and asian. The most commmon reason is because their skin color is not as light as the European-Americans or they look different from them. Althought the racism problem is not as worse as it used to be, you can tell the problem still exist. Like, for example, let say you are African-American, someone who is walking on the street and give you “some-kind-of-look” (like looking down at u) because it just happen to be you are the only one compare with the people who are around you. Or let say you are Chinese, and then when you are in the bus or the subway, there are people give u a look. If not, well then maybe they would pretend some kind of old-fashion Chinese performance and laugh it out. Or let say you are from Mexico, and some kids would say “oooo, Mexicano…” sacasticly and laughed.They don’t say it directly(actually, some do.), but you get the message. You are scared to stand up. Or maybe you just don’t care. I don’t see this kind of things happen much at all. But I’m sure this might happen to one of you for at least once. Noticing there aren’t examples that say people dislike European-Americans and look down at them. But it still do happen to them too. Why? Maybe because they see a lot of European-Americans look down at them, and so they think all of them are the same and do the same to them. Geez, prejudice prejudice. This happens over and over again everyday. Will this ever stop? Well, it might seem to be impossible. But one thing for sure – it can start with you – be open-minded and stop the racism problems. If you are someone who can’t deal with people who have different nationality from you, well, simple as it is – deal with it. How would you feel if you are him or her? If you are not, but the group of friends are, it’s time to stand up and say it is not ok. It might seem difficult, but think about it, if everyone is afraid to stand up, this problem will never be resolved. Your friends might laugh at you or look down at you, and then u end up with being left-out in the little corner. Think positive, what really might is – you will encourage others to do the same. Negative influence is very effective. So let’s positive influence take over it. That is – I am encouraging ALL of YOU to do so.

The immigants are immportant becuse then it would take teh jobs that the americans don’t want to do so the lwa is goingt o change if they want the jobs o be done like Garbage man and otehr things. Thats why immigaration have a big role in America
