What do we really need?

In class we discussed two quotes:

“Necessity is the mother of invention.”

“Invention is the mother of necessity.”

Which do you find more convincing or more true?

I think they’re both the same because like if someone needs a music player, then someone will theoretically invent the iPode (that is how you spelll it right?) And when someone invents the iPode, there suddenly becomes a need for it because it’s a new product that seems cool. So I say it’s a tie.

I disagree with Jon because in my opinion, I think the qoute “Necessity is the mother of invention” is more true. I find it more convincing. One reason I have is that if something is invented, for example, the washing machine, it should be needed then someone events it. If not, after inventing the washing machine, then people think it’s not necessity, then it’s just a waste of money producting this product. If you have printed any papers on this washing machine or any tv commerical, the company will use more money and have no profit. Well, after all i think when you needed something, then you invent it, is better than inventing something before knowing wether it’s needed or not. So I find the quote “Necessity is the mother of invention.” more convincing and more true.

What? If you invent something you need something then why invent it in the first place. i agreed with Nancy beacuse if you need some thats the reason why you invented it. If you don’t need something and you invent something, what for? You waste your tiem for something that you don’t need and you end up wasting money for something that people don’t need.

Yet people still use the washing machine. Right? I’m not sure….

Althought you don’t really need the washing machine, but it helps do your work, and you can chill when it is working for you, ALL it needs is MONEY!!

    Actually, I think Adrian has a point…….

Well, besides that, the washing machine you can admit takes time to install and manufacture and transport. Also, if you tried to shove money into a washing machine, it’ll a) Get set on fire b) Spare your money and it’ll come out a bit wet c) Do nothing except clank for half an hour and cease to exist functionally and or d) Not do anything at all and by some miracle still work.

I was wandering off for a bit but back to the subject….

An invention can come in handy. The telephone was an invention and it allowed the world to be connected. It was easier to communicate to someone without sending them a letter in the pouch of the nearest laser guided kangaroo cannon. Awesome.

Yeah, laser guiding is an invention and it helps to aim more precisely. But it wasn’t necessary. When it came out though, every body in the military who had a sniper rifle and wasn’t good with it needed it.

Oh right, to support my very first comment, greed is probably why invention is the mother of necessity. You don’t have to think about necessity is the mother of invention too long to get a grasp of the concept.

After reading 4 pages about The Age Of Inventions, I had some new ideas, and facts I’ve never know before.I think that without inventions, life would be very different. So I think industialization was good for America even though there are things that make it bad for America. For example, air polution and global warming. Many things we have and use right now were invented during the Age of Iventions. From 1870 to 1910, new machines and new ways to do things changed the way we lived and worked. Inventors found ways to improve products but there are inventions that were never used.
Between 1870 and 1910, many inventive minds were at work in the U.S. As inventors, they were curious, creative, and good at sloving problems. They did not give up easily. They also had the right resources, knowledge, and tools to produce their inventions.
An inventor I’d read about few days ago was Jan Ernst Matzeliger. He used his inventive mind and resources that revolutionized the way shoes were made. He worked for a show manufacturer and he was sure that he could invent a machine that could do the job much faster.
I think what he believe he can do is a big help and a huge push in his back for him to prove his inventions to make it even better. It’s the hope that make him continued working for four years to develop a working mode of a lasting machine. What makes mebe so proud of him was that he then worked years to perfect it and he spent his food money on things he needed to improve his machine. This is something I think all inventors should be following. And finally in 1883, he received a patent for his invention. His lasting machine made shoes ten times faster than a skilled worker did. A machine did their jobs.
I agree that “All really big discoveries are the result of thought,” Alexander Graham Bell said.
Inventors invent for many reasons. For example,Jan Matzeliger wanted to find a better and faster way of doing things. Other inventors are just curious, some want to make money, and some want to make people’s lives more fun. Anther example, Andrew Jackson Beard, an African American, wanted to make rail work easier, faster, and safer. He worked very hard to invent an automatic way to connect railroad cars which probably saved many workers from being hurt.
Another successful invention was Elijah McCoy’s automatic libricator because it allowed small amounts of oil to drip automatically onto moving parts of a machine while it was in use. Before his invention, people needed to stop machine to oil them by hand, if not, the machine could break down or become too hot and catch fire. His invention saved people time and money.

i agree with J.J and Nancy’s comment on the “necessity is the mother of invention”. i agree because of you don’t know what you need how are you suppose to invent something to help you with your problem. imagine that someone invents a space time traveling machine. Why would the person go through all the trouble of going to invent something if he doesn’t need it?
Another example is that if wants to invent something that is useful and he have to consider if it is necessary. if it is not, first of all it the inventor wouldn’t know what should be included in the invention. that is why i think that if you don’t need something you would not know what toi invent.

Well, here’s the problem, a time machine would be useful. Say, for example, people don’t like our current president. They could travel back in time and reset the amount of votes to let Al Gore win. Of course, that means that Bush might win the Nobel Prize but this is just an example.
