New Unit: Industrialization

Hooray! We’ve made it through our first unit in SS! You all did an amazing job pushing yourselves to think and expressing those thoughts in writing and aloud in class discussion.

Now, on to our next unit: Industrialization.  Our essential question for this unit is “Was Industrialization good for America?”  Keep this in mind as we learn and be sure to leave your thoughts and questions on the blog to get participation credit.

Industrialization probably was and was not a good thing for the United States of America. It was probably a good thing because it attracted more immigration, jobs, and advancesin technology. For example, I think the armored vehicle was developed.

However, industrialization seems like the forerunner for pollution and global warming. So, is it good or bad?

    Halp!!

I agree with Jon beacuse Industrialization cause pollution and other natural disasters but it may help you. But if you have a choice to have longer life and make the human race be a race for a long time which will you choose. I would choose longer life and more of human race. Also it is making the United States over polupated I bet that one day there wouldn’t be enough air and if there is it is probably polluted.
    PEACE.

I agree with J.J. Industrialization can cause people to look like this:

    I think that’s the one…..

Well, anyway, the invention of the cigarette will cause smoking cancers and everything in between. Stay away from drugs.

I agree with Joh and JJ because I think the same way. I think that if there’s no industrialization, then there’s no production and manufacturing. But with it, there’s harm because there’s pollution which affects the air we breathe in…oxygen. For example, cars, produces gas which pollutes the air. Even though it helps the United States improve in technology, production, and manufacturing, it brings danger and harm. What JJ said is a very good point. I agree that industrialization will soon make the United States even more over populated. Then it would cause even more trouble because there won’t be even air shared for everyone in the United States.

And also global warming is another good point to talk about in the next comment.

Interesting predictions and connections, guys and gals. Let’s see if your opinions change at all by the end of the unit.

  7. on October 10, 2007 at 1:59 pm Marie 802 Said:

I agree with Nancy, if there wasn’t industrialization then there wouldn’t have been any dangerous inventions that would kill more people, like cars, sure they’re helpful with transportation but just like Nancy said, they produce gases that pollute the air, and there are car accidents so more people die thanks to cars.

Industrialization is such an exciting time in history. I know some inventors. One guy I know- who’s a friend of my parents- has invented low cholesterol butter. He used to bring jars and jars over to my house and make us spread it on bread…He had to try it several times to get it right.
Something else he created was “retractable syringes”. This is a needle (like when you get a shot at the doctor) where the needle part gets sucked back into the plastic tube after it’s used…that way no one can get poked with it after someone’s blood is on it.

What do you guys think? Did we NEED these inventions? Did he just do it for fun? Now that we have them, could we live without them?

  9. on October 11, 2007 at 6:24 pm 1314520 (o.0)...Nancy 802 Said:

Responding to Ms. Diana’s comment…I think we needed these inventions and that’s why he invented it. We can’t live without these inventions now because without it, it’ll just make life harder. Low cholesterol butter is a good invention because people who use to eat high cholesterol butter with bread is not healthy. The cholesterol is too high and that’s why you get sick or maybe even die from eating too mcuh high cholesterol stuff. I think retractable syringes is also another good invention because it connects to a safty issue. If the retractable syringes are not create, people might accidently get pocked with a needle tip that has been used. If the person who used it is sick, ex. diabetes, the person who got poked might get the same diseases or sickness. So I think retractable syringes prevent people from danger because it suck the needle part back into the plastic tube after it’s used. That way no one will get poked accidently. The truth is that we can live without these two invention but this will bring danger for everyone.

You know, the whole oxygen thing got me thinking. All those ways to prevent global warming (ahem….climate change as most people say) cost more than it will help? That would really be bad. Also, industrialization can be pretty dangerous because of all of the technological development that can cause harm. An incredibly explosive (in my opinion) example is where you search on youtube Metal Wolf Chaos and click on the intro video. Never mind the stuff about the president and a hidden conspiracy but developing giant robots and destroying buildings is NOT cool. Also, it shows how the invention of armored vehicles (well, in the video not really a vehicle) could lead to massive amounts of destruction. Note: Turn your volume down to low when watching.

INDRUSZATION WAS NOT GOOD FOR AMERICA BEACUSE POEPLE DID WELL WITHOUT IT IN THE PAST SURE IT MAKE THING EASIER BUT IT IS REALLY UNNESSICTY IMEAN LIKE A GAMEBOY OR SOME SORT OF GAME YOU GET WORST EYESIGHT BY PLAYING IT TO MUCH SO IT IS BAD FOR YOU, INDRUZATION MADE THAT HAPPEN WHEN THERE WAS NO INDRUZTAION I DON’T THINK THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE GET BAD EYESIGHT, SO INDRZTAION IS BAD FOR YOU.

  13. on October 19, 2007 at 5:55 pm Jon 802 Said:

Geez, J.J., chill out. Industrialization isn’t the end of the world. It led to new technology and could fix eyesight.

  14. on October 19, 2007 at 6:03 pm Jon 802 Said:

Also, you can’t really blame someone for inventing the gameboy. They probably needed something to burn away time. It got popular and mass produced, greed took over. It happens. Its the same with nuclear weapons. The US bombed Hiroshima and then every other country with a potential for nuclear power decided to make their own darned bombs and use them against their enemies if needed (the beauty of Canada because it has no enemies). Except a truce was called and nuclear weapon production was supposedly stopped which has not happened to the gameboy (yet).

  15. on October 19, 2007 at 6:06 pm Jon 802 Said:

Actually, I do sort of agree with you J.J, because (if you saw that video) industrialization was the event in history that allowed such weapons to have a foundation and be built (well, most imagined weapons).

Instead of typing all the names that i agree with i will just type that i agree with everyone. Inventions is very important because there wouldn’t be any manufacturing and products (this is wat nancy wrote). Also inventions is very important to our life style because without inventions u couldn’t communicate with people really easily, life would just be different. The 12th opinion that jj did is the one i don’t really actually agree with because if there weren’t gameboys, u boys are going to be bored to death and also if gameboy is really bad for your eyes then computer is worst. Also jj can’t say industrialization is bad because without it u won’t have a lucky life right now.
i think industrialization is a good idea even though some of them is bad because our lives right now is fine and excellent and was much better than before. Ex: a long time ago many people need to sew frabric and cotton together to make clothes using hands but now they made machines that can help u. Also they weren’t machines that u can find info from which now they made an invention called “the internet” and u can find info there going to google.com.
The bad part is that when cigarettes were made many people died from cancer. So industrialization is not a bad idea but some were just shouldn’t be made.

accidently i post this comment on another blog…
After reading 4 pages about The Age Of Inventions, I had some new ideas, and facts I’ve never know before.I think that without inventions, life would be very different. So I think industialization was good for America even though there are things that make it bad for America. For example, air polution and global warming. Many things we have and use right now were invented during the Age of Iventions. From 1870 to 1910, new machines and new ways to do things changed the way we lived and worked. Inventors found ways to improve products but there are inventions that were never used.
Between 1870 and 1910, many inventive minds were at work in the U.S. As inventors, they were curious, creative, and good at sloving problems. They did not give up easily. They also had the right resources, knowledge, and tools to produce their inventions.
An inventor I’d read about few days ago was Jan Ernst Matzeliger. He used his inventive mind and resources that revolutionized the way shoes were made. He worked for a show manufacturer and he was sure that he could invent a machine that could do the job much faster.
I think what he believe he can do is a big help and a huge push in his back for him to prove his inventions to make it even better. It’s the hope that make him continued working for four years to develop a working mode of a lasting machine. What makes mebe so proud of him was that he then worked years to perfect it and he spent his food money on things he needed to improve his machine. This is something I think all inventors should be following. And finally in 1883, he received a patent for his invention. His lasting machine made shoes ten times faster than a skilled worker did. A machine did their jobs.
I agree that “All really big discoveries are the result of thought,” Alexander Graham Bell said.
Inventors invent for many reasons. For example,Jan Matzeliger wanted to find a better and faster way of doing things. Other inventors are just curious, some want to make money, and some want to make people’s lives more fun. Anther example, Andrew Jackson Beard, an African American, wanted to make rail work easier, faster, and safer. He worked very hard to invent an automatic way to connect railroad cars which probably saved many workers from being hurt.
Another successful invention was Elijah McCoy’s automatic libricator because it allowed small amounts of oil to drip automatically onto moving parts of a machine while it was in use. Before his invention, people needed to stop machine to oil them by hand, if not, the machine could break down or become too hot and catch fire. His invention saved people time and money.

  19. on October 21, 2007 at 7:12 pm Jon Said:

I agree with what Nancy just wrote for one)it is true that those inventions were helpful and saved time and lives and two)it takes too long to read so I just read the first ten sentences or so and agreed. Please don’t sue me.

  20. on October 21, 2007 at 7:17 pm Jon Said:

Yeah, and also, inventions wouldn’t have come around like Nancy said, if someone didn’t have a question about something or some sort of curiosity. I mean, look at the person who found out what happens when you put vinegar with baking soda in equal amounts. They was curious about what would happen (I hope).

Also, just to get a general statement across, industrialization is why we have this blog and why we have holes in the Ozone layers.

    Pure, clean, and simple.

i think inventions that were made during industrializatio was a new way to improve things and solve problems in your daily. without invetions, america would never move on and poeple would still have the same old stuffs. however, because of all those machines more factories were made and the factory owners treated wokers unfairly. the workers had to work a poor condition and some of them had to risk their lives to work. more poeple had to work in the factoies because the agriculture workers could’nt make much money but jobs working in the factoires were getting competitive so workers often got low payment like less than ten dollars a week for working about eighty hours. also, the owners were careless about the workers’ safety, the Triangle factory fire had happened and all of the bosses escaped, most of the workers died. this is history, it is just like a chain that connects everythingthat had happened. america’s econnomic had sure grown but there were more poor poeople than rich poor poeple had to live tenements or slumps, they had to chare rooms and those rooms were full of rats!

Well, industrialization changed America even if it was good or bad but to me industrialization was good and bad at the same time. It gave people an opportunity to work while coming to the U.S. It made people like Rockefeller rich but there were many people against it like Eugene Debs who was a union leader. The bad thing about industrialization was that the workers condition were really bad. The owner always try to take advantage of the workers and make them work in long hours with little pays. People did not need these inventions and it was necessity because we people can live without these things and because of this it polluted the environment. It was good and bad at the same time. If the worker condition was good and the owner did not try to take advantage, then i would agree that t was good but since all these have happened like the famous Triangle Factory Fire and the workers conditions, i can not fully agree that it was good for America.

  24. on December 2, 2007 at 6:50 pm Chantel Said:

I think that industrialization is good and bad for America. There are many reasons why I think that it is good, but i’m only going to tell you guys and gals one thing.People during industrialization like John Rockefeller was good for it. He gave money to charity and he sales oil to people in America(good thing). And even though Fredrick Diehl is aganist industralization i think that he would’ve been good for industrialization because of his fathers death and his own acciendent, he hepled people today that are in mines get more safety tools to get safely in and out of the mines.
